The prevailing model in consumer attention apps is wrong\u2014and the error has contaminated how we design attention mechanisms in AI.<\/p>\n<h2>The Muscle Metaphor<\/h2>\n<p>Headspace, Calm, Waking Up, and most other attention-training apps share the same underlying model: attention is a muscle. It&#8217;s weak. You train it. Over time, it gets stronger. You progress from 5-minute sessions to 10-minute sessions to 20-minute sessions, the same way you progress from 5-pound dumbbells to 10-pound dumbbells.<\/p>\n<p>This model is wrong. Muscles fatigue because of metabolic limitations\u2014they run out of fuel. Attention doesn&#8217;t run out of fuel. It gets hijacked. The mechanism is completely different.<\/p>\n<p>When your attention &#8220;wanders&#8221; during meditation practice, it hasn&#8217;t weakened. It&#8217;s been captured by a process\u2014usually the Default Mode Network&#8217;s narrative generation\u2014that is actively pulling attentional resources toward self-referential content. Your attention is perfectly strong. It&#8217;s just pointed at the wrong thing.<\/p>\n<p>This is the difference between a weak searchlight and a searchlight that&#8217;s been grabbed by someone else. The solution to the first problem is a bigger bulb. The solution to the second is removing the hand.<\/p>\n<h2>What Actually Improves Attention Control<\/h2>\n<p>If attention is being hijacked rather than failing, then strengthening isn&#8217;t the solution. De-hijacking is.<\/p>\n<p>This is what contemplative and attention science both suggest. You don&#8217;t build attentional strength. You identify and dissolve the processes that fragment attention. The narrative loops. The self-referential feedback cycles. The compulsive planning and ruminating that the DMN generates when left unchecked.<\/p>\n<p>When those processes quiet down, attention doesn&#8217;t &#8220;improve.&#8221; It reveals what was already there. Stable, wide, effortless awareness. Not something achieved. Something uncovered.<\/p>\n<p>The practical difference is enormous. Under the muscle model, maintaining attention requires continuous effort\u2014you&#8217;re holding something in place. Under the de-hijacking model, maintaining attention requires letting go\u2014you&#8217;re releasing the processes that disturbed it. The first is exhausting. The second is restful.<\/p>\n<h2>The AI Parallel<\/h2>\n<p>Transformer attention mechanisms have the same structural issue. Standard self-attention attends to everything in the context window, quadratically. This isn&#8217;t attention. It&#8217;s the absence of selection. The model doesn&#8217;t choose what to attend to. It processes everything and lets the softmax sort it out.<\/p>\n<p>This is the architectural equivalent of the DMN running unchecked. Every token attends to every other token, most of that computation is noise, and the system pays for all of it. The &#8220;attention&#8221; mechanism is actually an indiscriminate activation mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>Recent work on sparse attention, local attention windows, and attention pruning all point in the same direction: the solution isn&#8217;t more attention. It&#8217;s more selective attention. Reduce what the system attends to and performance improves\u2014not despite processing less, but because of it.<\/p>\n<p>This is the insight from attention science, translated to architecture. Attention doesn&#8217;t need to be stronger. It needs to be less fragmented.<\/p>\n<h2>What This Means for Training<\/h2>\n<p>At Laeka, we&#8217;re encoding this principle at the data level rather than the architecture level. Our datasets capture moments where an AI&#8217;s attentional frame is fragmented (trying to address too many considerations simultaneously, losing coherence across a long response, failing to maintain a single thread of reasoning) and a practitioner identifies the fragmentation.<\/p>\n<p>The correction isn&#8217;t &#8220;focus harder.&#8221; It&#8217;s &#8220;stop attending to what doesn&#8217;t matter.&#8221; The model learns to distinguish between necessary context and noise\u2014not through architectural constraints, but through training data that rewards attentional economy.<\/p>\n<p>A model trained this way should produce tighter responses. Not shorter necessarily. More coherent. Each sentence connected to the core thread without unnecessary digressions, hedges, or self-referential asides. Not because it was told to write concisely, but because its attentional patterns are cleaner.<\/p>\n<h2>The Broader Point<\/h2>\n<p>The attention-training app industry built a billion-dollar market on the wrong model of attention. Millions of people are sitting down trying to strengthen something that doesn&#8217;t need strengthening, wondering why it&#8217;s so hard, blaming themselves for not trying hard enough.<\/p>\n<p>The actual mechanism is simpler and more radical. You don&#8217;t build attention. You stop destroying it.<\/p>\n<p>If that principle applies to biological neural networks, our hypothesis is that it applies to artificial ones. Not through philosophical analogy. Through shared computational constraints. Attention is expensive. Selection is cheap. Any system\u2014brain or transformer\u2014that learns to select rather than saturate will outperform one that doesn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>The attention-training apps got the mechanism wrong.
