This isn&#8217;t metaphorical. It&#8217;s neurological.<\/p>\n<p>When you learn to write instead of only speak, your cognition shifts. Written thought is different from spoken thought. You can revise. You can hold multiple threads. The external medium changes the internal process.<\/p>\n<p>When you learn to calculate with a calculator instead of doing arithmetic by hand, something shifts. You lose the intuitive feel for number magnitude. But you gain the ability to work with larger spaces. Different trade-off. But real.<\/p>\n<p>AI systems are doing this at scale. You don&#8217;t have to be using them actively. Questions that assume massive exploration is possible.<\/p>\n<p>You start thinking in terms of &#8220;what would I want to explore if exploration were free?&#8221; That&#8217;s a different question than &#8220;what can I realistically explore?&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>The Outsourcing of Routine Thought<\/h2>\n<p>You don&#8217;t have to hold facts in memory anymore. You can ask for them. This frees up working memory for higher-order thinking.<\/p>\n<p>But it also changes what you prioritize. If facts are instantly available, you start valuing synthesis over memorization. You start asking different questions: not &#8220;what is true?&#8221; but &#8220;how are these facts connected?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This happens even if you&#8217;re not actively using AI. You&#8217;re thinking differently because you know the option exists.<\/p>\n<h2>The Assumption of Availability<\/h2>\n<p>You start assuming expertise is available on demand. You don&#8217;t need to become an expert in everything because you can ask an expert system about anything.<\/p>\n<p>This changes what you choose to learn. You focus on judgment and integration instead of breadth of knowledge. You assume you can understand any domain deeply enough to evaluate AI outputs in that domain.<\/p>\n<p>This is different from before AI, when you had to memorize to understand. Now understanding can be rapid, outsourced, then integrated.<\/p>\n<h2>The Shift in Epistemic Standards<\/h2>\n<p>What counts as knowing something changes. Before AI, knowing meant having internalized facts and procedures. Now knowing means understanding the shape of a space well enough to ask the right questions.<\/p>\n<p>You can know about a domain without having memorized it, as long as you can recognize when an AI system is wrong. This is a different kind of knowing. Lower on facts. Higher on judgment.<\/p>\n<p>This shift happens in your head even when you&#8217;re not actively using AI. You stop expecting to be right the first time because you&#8217;re used to rapid correction.<\/p>\n<h2>What This Means<\/h2>\n<p>You&#8217;re not neutral about AI. Even if you don&#8217;t use it, you&#8217;re living in a world where it exists. That fact is reshaping how you think.<\/p>\n<p>You think in larger spaces. You assume availability. You value judgment over knowledge. You iterate rapidly. You&#8217;ve internalized that effort isn&#8217;t the point, understanding is.<\/p>\n<p>These shifts happen in your mind even when you&#8217;re not actively using AI.
