Who is he? Why does everyone talk about him? And why does it matter?

A guy who worked on a “dead” technique

In the 80s and 90s, neural networks—the very foundation of deep learning—were a dead-end. Everyone had given up. It was like looking for gold in a field that had already been dug up 20 times.

Bengio said “no, I believe in this.” He started at the Université de Montréal, practically alone with his students, digging into this technique. For almost 20 years, he published, he taught, and… nobody cared.

And then, boom. Deep Learning wins.

Around 2010-2012, suddenly, deep learning became the most powerful technique in AI. How did that happen? Because Bengio and his collaborators (Geoffrey Hinton, Yann LeCun) had been right from the start. The three of them won a Turing Award (the Nobel Prize of computer science) in 2018.

And Bengio was in Montreal. That’s why Montreal became important: having one of the three greatest AI researchers is like having LeBron in your basketball league.

But why do you keep hearing about him?

Because now, Bengio is doing something rare: he’s speaking publicly about the risks of AI. Not in a paranoid way, but directly. He says AI models are becoming too powerful without us really understanding how they work. It’s a call to be careful.

It makes waves. Tech people say “that’s too alarmist.” Politicians say “he’s right.” He just keeps saying what he thinks. And that makes him interesting—it’s rare for a guy at the top of his game to say “hey, maybe we’re going too far.”

Why should you know about this?

Bengio isn’t just a name. He’s a symbol: what does it mean to be excellent, to persevere on something everyone else has abandoned, and then to have the courage to say “careful, it’s important that we’re prudent.” That applies way beyond AI.

Want to dig deeper into Bengio’s impact and other Quebec researchers? Sherpa can help, or read more on Laeka Research.

If you hear about Montreal and AI, you’ll run into the name Yoshua Bengio.
