Open Source vs Proprietary AI: Which Choice for Your Business?

Understanding the Difference

Unless your use case is simple (text classification, basic summaries), go proprietary for quality.

Factor 4: Vendor Lock-In

With proprietary AI, you depend on the vendor. If OpenAI changes its pricing, changes its terms, or shuts down its service—you’re affected.

With open source, you’re in control. You can even switch models if a better one emerges.

For mission-critical businesses, this flexibility is worth the extra technical cost.

Factor 5: Legal Compliance

  • Is the provider HIPAA or SOC 2 certified?
  • Where is the data hosted?
