AI and Your Privacy: What You Give Away Without Knowing

When you use an AI app — one that writes poems, translates, creates images — you’re probably just thinking about what you’re asking for. But AI isn’t free. And I’m not talking about money. It’s your data.

Imagine inviting someone into your home “just to chat.” While you’re talking, they’re mentally noting what’s in your fridge, your photos on the counter, your letters on the table. And they leave with all of it. That’s roughly what free AI is.

What happens to your info

Every time you type a prompt into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any other app, your message is recorded. By whom? By the company behind the tool. And what do they do with it? They use it to train their models, improve their systems, and — hold on — they can sell it to other companies.

Think about your health. If you ask an AI personal symptoms like “Why have I had a headache for three days?”, that doesn’t just become a lost question. It’s a health data point that stays somewhere on their servers. Same goes for your questions about money, relationships, or your job.

And the crazy thing? Most users don’t actually read the terms of service. Nobody does. But in there, they clearly say they keep your data.

The real risks

Worst case? Your info could be used against you later. Imagine an insurance company buying data because you asked an AI “How do I live better with my arthritis?” Or an employer discovering you were asking about how to change jobs. It sounds far-fetched, but legally, it’s possible.

There’s also the question of leaks. Servers get hacked. Employees share info. Apps disappear. Your data? It stays floating somewhere on the internet.

What you can actually do

First, be aware. Before pasting your personal info into an AI, ask yourself: do I want this info stored forever? If the answer is no, don’t share it.

Second, check privacy settings. Some apps offer options to disable recording. Not all, but some.

Third, use alternatives. Open-source and private tools exist. They’re not as flashy, but at least you know your data stays yours.

And honestly? The best approach is to treat every AI app like you’re talking loudly on a bus. Everyone can hear? Okay, be careful with what you say.
